LiNa Energy readies novel sodium battery energy storage system for pilot with strategic partner in India

  • Collaboration will see LiNa demonstrate a distribution scale 10 kWhr Sodium BESS
  • Paves the way for expansion of LiNa’s business in India and furthering strategic relationship

This new collaboration provides the chance to showcase how LiNa’s patented solid-state sodium battery cells deliver superior performance, safety, cost and sustainability benefits with a major integrated power company in India.

India is a huge growth market for solar energy which is creating a substantial need for energy storage. India’s Ministry of Power recently published a national framework for promoting energy storage systems which highlighted a need for over 200 GWhr battery energy storage by 2030. This is in stark contrast to the current installed capacity of less than 0.05 GWhr.

The problem extends beyond just building capacity, today’s lithium-ion batteries are not suited for the country’s high temperatures and the Ministry of Power’s framework highlights the importance of innovating new sustainable and low-carbon storage technologies.

Will Tope, CCO for LiNa said:

“We are thrilled to be working with such an established player in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. The demonstration of our 10kWh system is a great opportunity to showcase how well suited our novel approach is to the Indian market and we are excited to explore future collaboration opportunities jointly with our partner”.

The collaboration is supported by the Innovating for Transport and Energy Systems (ITES) initiative, backed by Innovate UK, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and government teams in India.

The programme provides innovative businesses access to a range of support to turbocharge decarbonisation efforts and help unleash the economic potential that innovation offers. LiNa’s selection as one of the programme’s first 20 SMEs is further evidence of the criticality of our technology and the important role it can play in the journey to Net Zero.

Today’s announcement signals LiNa’s focus and commitment to the Indian market.
